My name is Roddy Kelso, and I am the man behind Flighted Shots. Before starting the business I enjoyed a decade long career as an airline pilot with a large British airline. In 2023 I received a medical diagnosis that meant that I would be unable to meet the stringent requirements of aeromedical certification.
As a result of this enforced career change, I committed to learning about the expanding world of unmanned aircraft. I bought a DJI mini 4 pro and familiarised myself with its operation and the regulatory environment. One of my frequent flying sites was my golf club, and I enjoyed capturing images and videos of the picturesque surroundings. When construction of a new short game practice area was completed, it provided excellent subject matter, and I was able to provide the club with media content to publicise the new facilities.
This also prompted a conversation with the architect behind the design, Mr James Edwards of Edwards Design International. This was the beginning of a successful relationship with Flighted Shots capturing and producing media content on behalf of EDI of similar projects that had been completed or were in progress.
I employ many of the competencies used in the airline world during missions, and my understanding of meteorology allows me to not only maintain a safe operation, but also carry out missions at the best time for light. This allows for a flexible approach that lets me pounce when conditions are best to provide the most engaging output. With a decade’s experience of operating under CAA regulations and communicating with air traffic control units, I am confident and comfortable conducting compliant missions and operating in flight restriction zones.
As we begin to look ahead to 2025, I am looking forward to expanding my client list and providing more engaging content that shows facilities at their best. I am keen to hear from golf clubs, course architects, contractors, and content creators about any projects that might benefit from airborne imagery.
